搖滾的聖石

英文中有句諺語：A rolling stone gathers no moss. 中文翻譯成「滾石不生苔」。初中讀了這句後，一直搞不清楚這到底是正面還是反面的說詞，到底人應該滾動一下，免得身體心智生鏽發霉；還是人要安穩佔著茅坑，不要一直滾來滾去，不然積不了經驗、存不了錢。

不過，拿Rolling Stone來連結搖滾音樂Rock and Roll，真的是渾然天成到極點。

從維基查到最早的一首名為Rolling Stone的曲子，是藍調歌手Robert Wilkins在1928年的作品，現在到處查不到相關資料，但這首曲子較搖滾樂興起的1940年代要早上十幾年，因此可以推斷與搖滾無關。

接下來就是1948年Muddy Waters的Rolling Stone，雖然這也是首藍調歌曲，不過，卻開啟了一個狂亂躁動、充滿性與暴力的搖滾後起之秀。1962年，年輕的樂手Brian Jones打了個電話到Jazz News雜誌社，想要為新成立的樂團登個廣告，對方詢問樂團名稱為何，Jones恰好瞥見地板上Muddy Waters的唱片，遂脫口而出：「Rolling Stone！」

1964年The Rolling Stone推出同名專輯The Rolling Stone，1965年Bob Dylan完成了Like a Rolling Stone，同年The Who樂團推出Daddy Rolling Stone。

1967年，搖滾大本營Rolling Stone雜誌創刊，維基認為這本雜誌的命名來自於Muddy Waters的那首歌，不過，對此我稍有存疑，以該雜誌橫跨音樂、政治議題的屬性，以Bob Dylan的歌曲為名的可能性還大一點。

不論如何，此後「Rolling Stone(不論指涉什麼)」正式成為搖滾樂裡的聖石，所有搖滾人或多或少都要前來膜拜一下。

1971年The Temptations推出Papa Like a Rolling Stone(好歌！)，1973年Dr. Hook的The Cover of the Rolling Stone，1974年Robin Trower的Too Rolling Stone，至於歌詞裡提到「Rolling Stone」的則多不勝屬。

正因為Rolling Stone的巨大意象，我們才能瞭解，當年Bob Dylan跨界創作了Like a Rolling Stone，對於當時的搖滾樂界是何等震撼、何等歡欣的一大事件，也能了解為何事隔了40年，Rolling Stone雜誌仍然忠實的將它捧上500大之首的地位。
